Virtual application on Shipbuilding in the 18th Century

Virtual reality application that simulates the construction of an 18 th century ship in Ferrol’s arsenals

Within the museum collection of EXPONAV (Ferrol’s Naval Construction Museum), the remains of the María Magdalena frigate, built in Ferrol in the 18th century and sunk in 1810 in the waters of Viveiro, stand out for their historical value. It has various remains, most notably, the part of its bow and the stern of the ship. This was the reason why, as the first action within the framework of collaboration established between CIS Technology and Design and EXPONAV, a virtual reality application was developed that tries to facilitate the understanding of what 18th century shipbuilding was like in the Ferrol area, the most advanced at the time in Spain. In the virtual reality application, the complete construction of a frigate from that period is simulated, from the laying of the keel on the slipway until its departure from the dock for its first voyage. It combines the automatic reproduction of the application, in the style of a 3D video, with the total immersion of the viewer in the world represented. Developed for Android devices and Cardboard glasses.

This development was based on existing data on the construction techniques of those times in Ferrol’s shipyard and on the frigate Mª Magdalena and similar ships built in Esteiro’s shipyards in the 18th century. The application is available on Google Play for museum visitors to expand and reinforce the knowledge acquired on the subject with the other resources that the museum provides, and also allows visitors to take the application with them on their mobile devices.
